So in case you didn’t know (and I guess you probably don’t) Papa John’s pizza is having a discount sale or whatever until Sunday, where you can get 50% off the price of a large pizza by using the coupon code PIZZAGG. There is a website, pizza.gg and you’ll have a choice of “referrers” representing the various gaming divisions of E-Sports teams Evil Geniuses and Root Gaming, as well as a couple of casters in DJWheat and Ayesee.

Papa John’s is the latest in a very, VERY small list of possible ESports sponsors that don’t already have a vested interest in it, such as computer hardware manufacturers or a company like Madcatz. They could be the foot in the door for more mainstream sponsors to throw money at competitive gaming, which would be beneficial for all parties involved. That being said, I wish that Domino’s or Pizza Hut would have been the foot instead of Papa John’s. I won’t really get into criticisms of Papa John’s because other people here and around the Internet know way more than me; if you don’t know, they’re allegedly trying to get around the Insurance Mandate part of Obamacare by cutting employees hours under a certain threshold. Not cool, bros.

I’m also uncomfortable with the fact that it had to be effectively a fast food pizza chain that is doing this promotion. As a big fat guy who plays videogames more than is socially acceptable, I am a bit put off that there is a group of people trying to push the “Healthy Gamer” lifestyle, in that you can be a gamer and not be a fat slob of a neckbeard living in your mother’s basement, and that group is effectively being undermined by “SUPPORT ESPORTS BY BUYING PIZZA”.

The other, more worrisome thing for me, is what happens when you actually go to the webpage in question. Take a look, I made the link open in a new window for YOUR convenience. Notice that DJWheat has his own referral slot, as does Ayesee. Also notice that several, if not most, of Team EG’s Starcraft 2 division have their own individual slots. Now look at the rest. EG’s non-SC2 divisions (Fighting Games, Dota, World of Warcraft, and LoL) all have to share one slot each. Further, both of ROOT Gaming’s divisions (SC2 and Smite), as well as TeamLiquid’s SC2 team, Dota 2 team, and community site, all have to share one slot each. This is troubling to me, because it seems like the promotion is set up to overwhelmingly benefit not just EG, but specifically their SC2 division and those individual players in particular. And it seems like it’s being done at the expense of the other games. I said on my Twitter that it feels like this is being done to push the idea that ESports begins with SC2 and that all other games are secondary. And the more I look at that referral page, being dominated by a team that boasts one of, if not THE largest SC2 team in North America, as well as a site/team that is known PRIMARILY for their Starcraft content, I can’t help but feel like you could just get rid of the other slots, or replace them with more SC2 players/casters/teams, and it’d have the same effect.

I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be effort to change what companies do, but by crying “BOYCOTT!!”…

No. No it wouldn’t. It’s not simply refusing to spend money at Target or Abercrombie or Chick-Fil-A. It’s actively trying to find stores and individuals and companies whose brand image and policies and values you agree with. It’s saying I’ll spend my money at, say, Old Navy instead of Abercrombie. I’ll shop at K-Mart instead of Target. I’ll eat at Checker’s instead of Chick-Fil-A. In an ideal world, it would go even further than that, to “I will spend my money at this small, independent business rather than this large multi-national Conglomo-corp.”

Fact of the matter is, there is not very much that the average consumer can do to get a company to change the way they do business short of boycotting it. Because both Target and Abercrombie are publicly traded companies, they have stockholders. And they care WAY MORE about the stockholders than they do about customers.

You are never going to find a company, whether it’s a large conglomerate or a small business, that everyone agrees with policy-wise one hundred percent. It doesn’t matter the size of the company/conglomerate; unethical practices exist in ALL business.
Even if people suddenly all made the decision to stop shopping at large businesses and go to small companies, those small companies would end up turning into large businesses due to their consumer demand. Then more than likely, they would ultimately turn to more unfair business practices, which in turn would lead to a pattern of boycott, small business turns into large company, boycott, small business turns into large company, etc. And even if they didn’t turn to large businesses, the differing opinions and views of everyone in the country and the world would make it nearly impossible for any business- small or large- to exist without offending someone somewhere. Thats what I meant when I said commerce would cease to exist.

The utter hypocrisy of this website- crying out to boycott Abercrombie and Fitch while whining about people saying they’ll boycott Target, is ultimately what I’m trying to point out here. It’s fine to point out that what the A&F CEO said was shitty, but by then turning around and saying the Target boycotters are wrong while themselves boycotting a different company is at the highest level of contradiction.

I’ve noticed at this point that you seem to like arguing with me solely for the sake of argument, I assume to attempt to try and make me look stupid. If that is the case, kindly stop following me, because frankly I have no time to deal with any more people attempting to bring me down:

I guess I’m an optimist. I believe that companies that are owned by good-hearted people can achieve 100% acceptance, or at least as close as one can get. I think that when a company starts compromising those values, it most commonly is due to pressure from an outside source, so even that must be taken with a grain of salt. I guess I’ve just convinced myself that it’s possible to live in a world where trying to compartmentalize everyone into little groups because of superfluous differences is silly and everyone is accepted and everything is wonderful and nothing hurts. I think that Tumblr is at least trying to be consistent in its righteous indignation: creating labels for people, and then separation or exclusion based on those labels is wrong, and people shouldn’t feel bad about themselves because they’re such-an-such a person. It IS hypocritical however to call for a boycott against something you dislike and refuse to support, then tear down a boycott against something you support.

Also, I like arguing with you because you make good points and back them up. You take the time to express and expand upon your ideas and opinions, and it’s fun to have a dialogue with someone like that.

But your doggedly persistent self-persecution is getting to be really bothersome. No, I’m not arguing with you to try and make you look stupid. I’m not interested in attempting to bring you down. And for the record, I think a lot of the other people on Tumblr, in my position, aren’t trying to do those things either.

I Bought Skullgirls Finally

Having just purchased it since the 360 patch (FINALLY) dropped, and having only done Training Mode…Skullgirls is a GOOD game.

The Training Mode is miles better than pretty much every other indie fighter, and it outpaces some AAA titles (Capcom games come to mind).

This is seriously a good looking game, and I’m excited to really start learning how to do stuff in it.
